We all have people in our lives we want to thank at different times of the year and for different reasons. One very popular way to thank these amazing people in our lives is to gift them cake or cookie making kits with a customized message on a pot holder.

These three free pot holder svg designs can be used for customized potholder gifts for a number of occasions. I’ve got you covered for Teacher Appreciation, Christmas and Birthdays. These files are supplied in SVG and DXF format.

You Will Need:

Pot holders or oven mitts (available at Dollar Tree or Amazon)
– A cutting machine like a Cricut Maker or Silhouette Cameo
Heat Transfer Vinyl (aka HTV or iron on) in white or another light color (unless of course you are using a light colored pot holder)
Betty Crocker Cookie Mixes
– One of the three free Pot Holder SVG designs – Available in my FREE Craft library, link at the bottom of the page to download your free designs.

Making The Potholder:

1. Measure the area:
First, measure the area of the potholder from seam to seam, top to bottom and side to side. Then reduce the measurement by a quarter inch so you have a border around the design.

This will help you avoid accidentally heat pressing the vinyl onto the edge seam because the design is at it’s max width! This final measurement will be the maximum width and height you can make your design.

2. Download your free design:
Next, download your free designs from my free Craft Library by clicking the link at the end of this page. Then, upload your free design to your cutting machine software.

I am using a Cricut Maker and the Cricut Design Space software for this project. If you are using a Silhouette machine and Silhouette Studio Basic Edition, please use the DXF file included with the free designs.

Choose which design you will be using and either hide or delete the other two. I am going to make the Thanks For Making Me One Smart Cookie design and I will resize it to fit to my maximum dimensions.

3. Cut The Pot Holder SVG Design:
Put your heat transfer vinyl onto the mat. If you are using a Cricut, you will use the green mat. You must put the shiny plastic side of the heat transfer vinyl face down.

The heat transfer vinyl is the dull side and this should be facing up so the machine can cut the HTV and not the shiny backing layer.

Make sure to mirror your design before you cut it. Now send the design to cut.

4. Weed The Excess Vinyl From The Cut Design:
Once the design has been cut, weed the excess vinyl and get ready to press it onto the pot holder. Turn on your heat press and set it to the relevant heat for your specific HTV.

I am using an Easypress 2 and Cricut white heat transfer vinyl. The heat setting for this is: You can see all Easypress heat settings on the Cricut website Heat Guide page.

5. Prepare The Potholder For Heat Pressing
Before you heat press the cut out design onto the pot holder, make sure your pot holder is completely clean of any fibres or dust. A few run overs with a lint roller, or as I like to call it, a sticky roller, and you’re good to go.

The pot holder is ready and your heat press should now be warmed up to the correct temperature too.

6. Heat Press The Design Onto The Potholder:
First warm the potholder with the heat press for about 15seconds. You can use some parchment paper between the potholder and the heat press to protect the potholder if you are using a Cricut Easypress.

Next, take your weeded design and align it shiny side up onto the pot holder. Make sure the design is centred and not overlapping the seamed edges of the potholder.

Apply your heatpress for the required time. Peel the shiny liner off according to the instructions of the brand of heat transfer vinyl you are using, and Voila!

You have an amazing customized pot holder for that special person! This is a great project for a quick and easy gift, that will no doubt make the recipient very happy!
